Mangosteen or the so-called 'food of the gods' is popularly found in the Davao region.
This fruit is almost the same size as an orange, but with deep-purple skin.

According to Dr. James Duke of United States Department of Agriculture, mangosteen has almost 140 properties that are good for the health.
The mangosteen contains anti-oxidants which are helpful to your cardiovascular, gastro-intestinal, respiratory, immune and nervous systems.
Anti-oxidants such as beta-carotene, lycopene, vitamins C, E and A found in mangosteen can help protect body cells from damage.
It is also found out that mangosteen contains xanthones, which are unique biological compounds that can kill cancer cells.
In an interview with Rated K, health and wellness advocate Dr. Edwin Bien explained that mangosteen also has anti-inflammatory properties.
It can help fight stomach ache, chest pain, and can also reduce swelling.
According to the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), mangosteen juice can combat Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, fungal and viral ailments and aging. It is also said to prevent gum diseases, hardening of the arteries, diarrhea, glaucoma and cataracts.
It can also help in weight loss and lower blood pressure and blood sugar.
Different varieties
Mangosteen can be enjoyed in different varieties.
Aside from jams, candies, and juices, you can also get the benefits of mangosteen in the form of mangosteen wines, vinegar, food supplement capsules, and dried mangosteen chips.
The fruit's inner skin and stem can also be boiled and served as tea.
In 2010, some participants from different government firms like Food Processors Association and Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA) joined a training conducted by the Department of Science and Technology's Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) to inspire and motivate them to produce different products made from mangosteen as the demand for healthy food increases.
